AR Art and Apparel Instructions

Instructions for using a piece of AR art or apparel with an Instagram filter effect:
  1. Launch the Instagram app
  2. Go to the @Brujahahahaha profile page on Instagram.
  3. On the artist profile, go to the "Filters"  tab where the filters live. The "Filters" tab is a smiley face above the tiles.
  4. Select the effect that corresponds to your target design.
  5. Tap the "Save" icon to save to your Instagram camera.
  6. Create a new Instagram story and find the effect in your saved effects.
  7. Using the Instagram camera, target the design on the t-shirt, sticker, or art that you purchased. The effect will NOT work with the front-facing selfie camera or on a reflection in the mirror. You can use the guide that appears on the screen briefly to estimate where the camera should be in relation to the design and what the design orientation should be. Use the camera in good lighting. Make sure the target design is unobstructed. Get the target design relatively flat.
  8. Move or zoom the camera around slowly until the design triggers the animation. You may need to move the camera in very close to the design.
  9. Once the design triggers the animation effect, you can move the camera around within a reasonable range and the effect should stay activated. Note that extreme movement, change in reception or wifi, or dramatic changes in lighting will impact the ability of the camera to recognize the target or sustain the effect.
  10. Post to Instagram! Tag @Brujahahahaha for a repost.

Instagram Filter Effect Best Practices

  1. The effect will NOT work with the front-facing selfie camera or on a reflection in a mirror. The design must be oriented according to the guide. You might need to get a friend to help capture the video.
  2. Use the filter effect and target design in good lighting.
  3. Make sure the target design is unobstructed.
  4. Keep the target design as flat as possible. We've successfully tried the t-shirts on curvy bodies, but experiences may vary.
  5. Make sure you have a decent, stable connection on your phone.
  6. Move or zoom the camera slowly around the design to trigger the animation. You may need to try a few times.
  7. Limit extreme movements. The technology isn't that advanced yet!

FAQ

I can't find the Instagram effect to use with my t-shirt, sticker, poster, etc.
The corresponding filter effect is linked in the product description in the shop, or you can watch the demonstration video above for help finding the "Filters" tab on my Instagram profile. When locating the "Filters" tab look for this icon above the tiles on my Instagram profile.
A smiley face with sparkles.
If you are still unable to find the filter for your product, please send a photo of the product you purchased to me on Instagram @Brujahahahaha and I will link you to the filter effect.

Not all of my products have a corresponding Instagram effect, only the products sold under the AR Art & Apparel section of the site will have filter effects.

I can't get the effect to work. What is happening?
Watch the full demonstration video above. Filter effects can be glitchy, so sometimes it takes a lot of patience. Keep trying if it won't click! The filter effect will NOT work with the front-facing selfie camera or on a reflection in a mirror. You might need to get a friend to help you capture the video.

I still can't get the effect to work. What is up?
The platform used for building Instagram effects is constantly changing, which unfortunately means that older models of phones or old versions of Instagram may become incompatible as the platform evolves. With the constant updates to the technology, sometimes effects can become glitchy for reasons out of my control. I do my best to maintain the effects for universal use as the platform changes.

I made these products knowing that Instagram filter effects may be fleeting. I hope these designs can be loved without the gimmick of AR effects. Similar to the way an escalator breaks and becomes stairs; when an Instagram effect breaks, your product becomes a normal t-shirt or sticker. I can't guarantee that the products will work with AR forever, we're all just along for the ride!

I am very curvy or big and tall, will this camera effect work on my t-shirt?
I've successfully tried the t-shirts on curvy and larger bodies (F boobs and size XL), but experiences may vary and there are elements which are out of my control. I will always offer every available size of shirt in my designs without additional cost, because inclusivity matters to me. However, the Instagram effect platform has limitations out of my control. Please reach out to me directly on Instagram @Brujahahahaha if you have suggestions for ways to make AR effects more inclusive for big bodies! Your feedback is important to me.

I put the sticker on my water bottle and the effect won't work now! Help!
Unfortunately putting the target images on dramatically curved surfaces will warp the lines of the image and can make the target design unrecognizable to the camera. However, I have successfully removed a sticker from a water bottle and pressed it onto another surface (I put a heavy item on top of it overnight to help it stick better) so there is hope for you!

Does the effect work on Facebook or Snapchat or TikTok?
I currently build effects for Instagram only. If you want to share the videos on other platforms, you'll need to shoot the video on Instagram, download the video, and upload to another platform. If a new, better platform pops up, I may consider learning how to create effects there, too.

The target guide disappears before I can line up the shot on the camera. WTF?
The guide plays for a few seconds after you launch the effect. The guide is only there to give you the orientation of the design and an estimation of where the camera should be in relation to the target. Each model of phone interacts differently with the target image, and the guide is just there to give you a starting point. You can still trigger the animation without the guide. However, if you do want to see the guide again, you can exit the effect and then re-select to reactivate the guide.

The effect music doesn't play while I'm recording. WTF?
Currently,  Instagram doesn't have the functionality to play in-effect sounds as you are recording. The final recorded video will have the music! Not all effects have music.
